Nicholas Shipman (clarinet)
Claire Wadsworth (bassoon)
Jamie Thomas (horn)
Stefan Hofkes (conductor)
Coming soon after our performance of the mischievous yet beautiful 2nd Piano Concerto in our December concert, we now meet a very different side of Shostakovich with his 10th Symphony. To quote the man himself: “Music is a means capable of expressing dark dramatism and pure rapture, suffering and ecstasy, fiery and cold fury, melancholy and wild merriment”. All these elements and more are to be found in this fascinating work.
Contrasting this: two ‘Hommages à Mozart’, the charming wind quartet version of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, and Ibert’s 200th birthday present from 1956, a short study in Mozartean vitality refracted through the prism of mid-20th century Parisian harmonies.
There will be a retiring collection in aid of Friends of Kampala Music School.
