For the first time in my life I feel obliged to voice my disappointment with a restaurant. Overall, it was one of the worst eating out experiences I've ever had - and it was also my husband's 40th...
We'd been to this restaurant a couple of times before booking it for his 40th birthday. We selected it mainly because he is Italian and so are many of his friends, we wanted simple and genuine Italian food and also the location suited most people so we thought - surely, we can't go wrong. To make things simpler for everyone, we went for a set menu which, by the way, wasn't such a good value. What a mistake....
Firstly, we were told at 8pm that they ran out of bruschetta. However, they had bread and tomatoes... Essentially, bruschetta is bread with tomatoes... so how can an Italian restaurant run out of bruschetta?!
Then at 8.30 pm on Friday evening they conveniently ran out of house wine so we had to go for more expensive wines. However, a couple of hours later, we saw people at other tables drinking the house wine... Interesting...
The starters were OK, risotto con funghi was average but also OK. The pasta dish was truly appalling - it was burned, dry and tough and the little sauce it had tasted exactly like the tomato sauce you would use for making pizzas. The pizzas were again very average - the same sauce as our baked pasta.
And then the desserts... We placed all our orders with the waiter only to hear 10 min later that, basically, they again ran out of everything and we can only have tiramisu or white chocolate truffle. So we did... Honestly, the stuff I buy in supermarkets rates as supreme when compared to what we had in Napule.
Finally, we asked for limoncello. Again, 5 min later the waiter comes back saying - guess what... they ran out of limoncello!
By that time, we all wanted to get out of there so we asked for the bill. The bill arrived but was for approx. ?200 more than it should have been. I went to speak to the manager and the cashier and received another bill for ?200 less. We divided it among 11 of us and I went back to the cashier with all the money. However, she took the bill out of my hand and replaced it with a new bill for ?100 more saying that she had made a mistake! I didn't want to go back to my friends asking for more money as I didn't want to ruin the evening and my husband's birthday. So I just paid the difference. In total, the highly disappointing meal at Napule, costed us ?190. Oh please...
Another big mistake was not counting the bottles of wine we drunk. We had a few drivers amongst us and 2 pregnant women so we worked out that those who did drink had approximately 3 bottles a head... I guess I will be counting my bottles from now on!!
And yes, I tried to talk to the manager - such a waste of my time and breath. Do I need to say that none of us will go there again?? Ever.
