About the Sherman Theatre
The Sherman Theatre is a producing theatre in the Cathays area of Cardiff, close to the city centre and Cardiff University. Opened in the 1970s and since refurbished, it has two auditoria — a main house and a flexible studio — and produces much of its own work as well as hosting touring companies from across the UK.
The Sherman has a particular reputation for new writing and for Welsh talent, and it regularly welcomes companies such as National Dance Company Wales, which is based in the city. Its programme spans drama, dance, music, family shows and comedy, making it one of the busiest venues in the Welsh capital.
What to Expect
The Sherman is an intimate venue: the main house is large enough for touring productions but small enough that the stage feels close, while the studio offers a more experimental setting for new work. Bars and a café open before performances, and there is a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that suits both first-time visitors and regulars.
The building is accessible, with step-free access, accessible seating and assistance available from front-of-house staff. As a producing theatre, it often stages work that later tours elsewhere, so seeing a show here can feel like catching something early.
Getting There
The Sherman Theatre is on Senghennydd Road, Cathays, Cardiff, CF24 4YE. Cathays railway station is a short walk away, and the theatre is within easy reach of the city centre on foot or by bus, with parking available nearby. For more around the city, see our Cardiff events guide.
Good to Know
Tickets are available online, by phone and in person, with concessions and access bookings offered on many performances. It is worth checking the studio programme as well as the main house, as the two often run at the same time. Cathays is a lively student quarter, so there are plenty of cafés and bars within a few minutes of the theatre for a pre-show bite.
The Sherman’s café and bar are open to everyone, not just ticket-holders, and the building often buzzes with students and theatre-goers in the hour before a show.
