The Dream of Gerontius at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday 15th July 2023, 7.30pm

Exeter Festival Chorus 30th anniversary concert, with partner German choirs, Southern Sinfonia, and soloists Daniel Norman, Jess Dandy and Alex Ashworth, directed by Andrea Brown.

The Exeter Festival Chorus 30th anniversary concert takes place in the magnificent setting of Exeter Cathedral, with musical director Andrea Brown.
Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, widely regarded as his choral masterpiece, is a large and powerful work. It is a statement of faith and wonder that tells the story of a dying man. In Part II, his soul is guided by an angel towards heaven, where he is about to witness wonders beyond any human imagination. ‘This is the best of me’, the composer wrote on his manuscript score, and the searing burst of musical emotion as Gerontius glimpses his God for a moment bears that out in a truly dramatic way.
We are delighted to be joined by Southern Sinfonia, our German partner choirs Hanauer Kantorei, Bachchor Bad Homburg and choristers from Exeter Cathedral Youth and Junior Choir. The concert also features renowned soloists Daniel Norman – Gerontius, Jess Dandy – Angel and Alex Ashworth – Priest/Angel of the Agony, with Peter Adcock – chamber organ.
