Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger is a NASA astronaut, geologist and former high-school science teacher turned space explorer. She was a Mission Specialist for the International Space Station and the Space Shuttle on STS-131, racking up an impressive 15 days, 2 hours, and 47 minutes in space. Her journey to the stars began in a high-school classroom, where a single question launched her into orbit and into the NASA program. As one of just four teacher-turned-astronauts to venture into the cosmos, Dottie is making history while inspiring future explorers. Dottie is also the Commander of NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) 16, leading the charge in extreme space simulations. Also, does space flight accelerate muscle ageing?
Professor Steve Harridge (Director of the Centre of Human and Applied Physiological Sciences (CHAPS) at King’s College London) will also be giving a talk on his research in human skeletal muscle function and plasticity, particularly with regard to ageing. He will talk about how space travel can affect muscle and how this may, or may not, reflect an accelerated ageing process.
