Explore the full history of the birth and evolution of rugby union in Japan, from 1866 when Yokohama became the site of the oldest rugby club in Asia, to being awarded Rugby World Cup 2019.

This special exhibition charts the evolution of rugby alongside the development of modern Japan. How 'the father of Japanese rugby', Ginosuke Tanaka, brought the sport to Keio University and how a series of sporting pioneers, including members of the Japanese Royal Family, allowed the sport to flourish. It will examine how Japanese corporations have nurtured the game at a domestic level allowing Japanese rugby to make significant impacts at international level, and culminating in the famous victory the Brave Blossoms achieved over the Springboks at Rugby World Cup 2015 and the awarding of the 2019 Rugby World Cup to Japan.

The exhibition will be within the World Rugby Museum, which is newly reopened after a £1.8million redevelopment and is located in the South Stand of Twickenham Stadium, the home of England Rugby.

Visitors will be welcome to watch an extensive interview with England head coach, Eddie Jones, who coached the Japanese team to their famous victory in 2015 over the Springboks. He comments “Having a successful world cup and a successful national team gives kids a dream. They can play international sport at the highest level and it doesn't matter what size you are. That's really important for the future of Japanese Rugby." Other notable items on display include the oldest rugby jersey in Japan, the oldest Japanese international jersey and a jersey from the 2015 victory over South Africa.

Visitors will also enjoy the rest of the World Rugby Museum, which includes a Rugby World Cup gallery and interactive zone for younger rugby fans. With so much rugby memorabilia on show at the home of England Rugby, the World Rugby Museum really is a must-visit for any fans of the sport.
