About Sadler’s Wells
Sadler’s Wells is the home of dance in London, standing on Rosebery Avenue in Islington. A venue has stood on or near the site since the 17th century, and the present theatre — opened in the late 1990s — has become one of the most respected dance houses in the world, presenting ballet, contemporary dance and international companies throughout the year.
Its programme is unusually broad: major touring companies, associate artists, new choreography and family-friendly dance all share the stage. Many of the artists who appear here go on to define the art form, which is why audiences travel from across the UK and beyond to see work at Sadler’s Wells.
What to Expect
The auditorium is purpose-built for dance, with excellent sightlines and acoustics, and the foyers and bars open well before curtain-up. Expect a full evening: a main performance with an interval, and sometimes a pre-show talk or post-show discussion alongside it. The venue is fully accessible, with step-free routes, accessible seating and assistance available on request.
Sadler’s Wells also has a second space, Sadler’s Wells East, across the city, so it is worth checking which venue a performance is in when you book — the Islington theatre is the one on Rosebery Avenue.
Getting There
Sadler’s Wells is on Rosebery Avenue, Islington, London, EC1R 4NT. The nearest Underground station is Angel on the Northern line, a short walk away, and the theatre is well served by buses along Rosebery Avenue and nearby St John Street. For more around the area, browse our London events guide.
Good to Know
Tickets are sold online, by phone and in person, and it is worth booking early for popular dance runs. Concessions, access performances and multi-buy offers are available on many shows, and details are published on the venue’s website. Islington’s restaurants and bars are within a few minutes’ walk, making the theatre easy to combine with a pre-show dinner.
Because the venue sits in a residential part of Islington, evenings here feel calmer than a West End night out while still being firmly part of London’s cultural scene.
