This melodrama is composed by Julien Chilcott-Monk for two actors – Sarah Bullen is The Guardian Angel and Neil Nisbet Gerontius – chorus, soloist (Elizabeth Barlow) and percussion.
The performance is in two parts. The first gives us Gerontius alone with his thoughts and memories, conscious from time to time of those friends and family who surround his bed. He leaves this world. The second part gives us a conversation between Gerontius and his Guardian Angel, who guides and instructs him through the Heavenly realms. We meet noisy and unpleasant (yet rather comical) demons and many ranks of Angels on the way. Gerontius understands and begins to see his place in the scheme of things. He listens to the song of the Angel of the Agony and immediately rushes away from the Guardian Angel to meet his maker. He is not quite ready for this and asks to be taken away where he may reflect on the life he has left.. Time passes and the purifying waters subside, the Guardian Angel collects his charge and we hear the grand chorus of angels in Newman’s popular hymn.
